What should my first blog be about? Spelunking, maybe. Caving is the modern P.C. term. There's just something about a cave. It presents a part of nature's final frontier -- a subterranean universe of mazes, tight crawl spaces, vast chambers, deep crevices, cascading waterfalls, bizarre creatures and extraordinary natural sculptures just waiting to be discovered and photographed. Caves present a unique challenge for a photographer. Photography is at it's best when the lighting is beautiful. The very essence of a cave is to be dark and mysterious, but if you have a good light source, cave photos can be breathtaking. A cave might not be your choice of venue for a wedding, but it can still erupt with amazing photos. Even great portraits can be created in these uninviting caverns, especially if you set up a portable studio. Don't laugh, it's not that hard to do. As a professional photographer, I believe that anything worth doing is worth doing right. Although even without a studio setup, great pix are waiting for you deep underground. Anyway you approach it, caving, like scuba diving or rock climbing, is just as adventurous as you want it to be. There are family-friendly caves you can stroll through on a paved path. They are the easy ones to photograph. And there are others that require hundreds of feet of face-in-the-dirt crawling and rappelling down bottomless shafts. I prefer the latter. Keep on exploring. And don't forget to take some pictures.
